Dubai School Parade 2017
For the past two years in a row, the Dubai Top 100 Student Leadership Programme has organized the annual Dubai School Parade that brought students from all of Dubai’s private schools to celebrate the Watani UAE Flag Day with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid AlMaktoum. In 2015, more than 12,000 students joined the school parade in Dubai Creek Park. In 2017, more than 22,000 students from around 200 Dubai private and public schools joined the parade at Zabeel Park with His Highness. Dubai Top 100 now plans to work with all of Dubai’s private schools to establish the Dubai Student Council and have at least 46,000 students celebrate the next Watani UAE Flag Day with HH Sheikh Mohammed on November 2, 2017!
Dubai Top 100
The Dubai Top 100 Student Leadership Programme was established as the seeding program for the Dubai Student Council. Its educational goals are to provide students of all nationalities living in Dubai with a free-to-all high-quality practical real-life citizenship education that equips them with the knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them to play a full and active part in any society they live in. As an extracurricular activity, this platform of citizenship education fosters students’ keen awareness and understanding of democracy, government and how laws are made and upheld. As students get involved with the Dubai Student Council they are equipped with the skills and knowledge to explore economic and social issues critically, to weigh evidence, debate and make reasoned arguments. It also prepares them to take their place in society as responsible global citizens, manage their lives well and make sound decisions. At the core of this education is a development of interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, and team building skills.
Dubai Student Council
On December 2, 2016, being the 45th UAE National Day Anniversary, we are uniting the student population in all of Dubai’s private schools into a student nation that we will hereon refer to as the Dubai Student Council! In that sense, every student be it a UAE national or expatriate resident, registered at a private school in Dubai shall have the right of citizenship (membership) in the Dubai Student Council at no cost, fees, or charges. This student nation will truly be a nation of global citizens united by the common values of internationalism, civility, respect, honesty, fairness, tolerance, compassion and friendship that Dubai has modeled throughout its history and that the UAE has upheld since its birth 45 years ago. Of course, existing school student councils will continue to maintain autonomy and independence while the Dubai Student Council will initiate citywide initiatives that school student councils can opt to participate in and organize collectively.
Voting, Elections, and Networking
The age of citizenship, and thus of participation, in the Dubai Student Council, is achieved when students reach Grade 2/Year 3 and until they graduate from high school (Grade 12/Year 13). Every student that has achieved the age of citizenship shall have the right to vote not only in student referendums that will raise awareness of important social and cultural issues related to the youth, but also in annual citywide student elections that will choose the members of executive arm of the Dubai Student Government. This student government will be a citywide networking platform that allows school student councils to communicate, work together, and achieve common goals and involve all students in their schools in citywide programs and initiatives that will raise the quality of the education and improve student life in the city.
Dubai Student Government
There shall be three branches of the Dubai Student Government and these are: The Lower House of Representatives, the Upper House of Representatives, and the Student Government. Both the Lower and Upper Houses will be made up from students who are already members of their existing school student councils who have been nominated by their school principals to represent their schools in each house. The Student Government, on the other hand, will be elected by all members of the Dubai Student Council (all school students in Dubai), and will have a structure that is like that of the real-life UAE Government. It will have a Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and the various other ministerial posts. Each student minister will put together an agenda for their student ministry derived from the goals of the real-life UAE government. However, these goals must be interpreted in the context of students, school life and social work and community life. This will expose students in Dubai to the UAE National Agenda and UAE Vision 2021, and allow them not only to have a good understanding of these goals, but also to share in them and find exciting new ways of contributing and adding to them. General elections for the first Student Government will be held during the academic year 2017-2018.
Every year, school principals shall nominate one boy and one girl from their existing school student councils from their primary/lower school (Grades 2-5/Years3-6) to represent their respective schools in the Lower House of Representatives. Members of the Lower House shall meet periodically to put forth and discuss ideas that can be raised with the members of the Student Government. Furthermore, members of the Lower House are responsible for the implementation of initiatives approved by the Student Government in their respective schools. Members of the first cycle of the Lower House will be announced on December 2, 2016 and will work during rest of the current academic year 2016-2017 to lay the groundwork for the first elections of the first Student Government in 2017-2018 and to prepare for and collectively organize the Dubai School Parade 2017. In due course, the Lower House will elect its Speaker who will be responsible to organize house sessions, manage the house floor, set the agenda and monitor proceedings during house sessions.
